We are conducting a teach-in, discussion, and action organizing related to the problem of excessive amounts of money distorting our democracy by inordinately influencing political and government decisions. The event will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Eugene (1685 W 13th Ave, Eugene) on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 3:30 pm.
Dan Bryant will open the teach-in with thoughts about inequality, and how income and wealth inequality has been allowed to corrupt our democracy.
What can we do about this problem? People in Oregon are lobbying their legislators to call for a convention to propose an amendment or amendments to the U.S. constitution to deal with excessive corporate influence and over our democracy, and to reverse the trend from democracy to plutocracy. We are trying to get the Oregon legislature to join Vermont, California, and Illinois in calling for a convention to propose amendments to the U.S. Constitution to address the issue. Quite a few Oregon legislators are already on board, but we the people need to push them to do the right thing.
Find out how we got to our current crisis in democracy, how the amendment process works when initiated at the state level, how states have played a major role in past amendment battles, what needs to be seriously considered when proposing an amendment to address the problem, and how you can help with this effort.
Join with us to add your ideas and energy to the effort to reclaim the dream of democracy!
